Venue - check. Rings - check. Cake - check… What's missing? The honeymoon! Let's be honest (although we may be slightly biased), it's one of the most important parts of the whole wedding process. If you're seeking inspiration for that perfect post-wedding getaway, why not look a little closer to home with some seriously romantic destinations right on our doorsteps...here's a handpicked selection of top destinations for honeymoons in Europe....
In Greece we have chosen the Cyclades, a particularly dreamy area, and an ideal summer Greek honeymoon choice. We would recommend the island of Santorini, one of the most famous Greek islands, and physically one of the most romantic and spectacular islands in the world, with its giant sea-filled caldera created by an ancient volcanic eruption. To make the stay even more luxurious we reccomend staying at Grace Santorini - romantic al fresco settings do not get any better than they are at Grace. The quaint towns of Fira and Ia cling to the faces of soaring cliffs that plunge straight into the sea and there are a number of super-chic and highly romantic boutique hotels that we know well. Finally for full get away from the crowds' privacy, try the little known but beautiful island of Paros, and the Yria hotel has an excellent private cottage for seclusion-seeking 'mooners.
Portugal's bustling cities, secret beaches and rich culture make it a post-wedding destination to really brag about. Hip honeymooners should head to the Areias de Seixo hotel, situated only an hour out of Lisbon. This creative, cool boutique hotel is brimming with mismatched furniture, quirky lighting and rolling beds. Inevitably we'd suggest the Love Room for its roaring fireplace, Jacuzzi and absence of TV (yes, it's time to learn who you've just married). For rural countryside escapes, head to Alentejo with its cork oak forests and unspoilt coastline. We highly recommend Sublime Comporta as a honeymoon hideaway; the Cabana Suite is surrounded by forest, opens out to a private plunge pool and boasts a roaring fire - the perfect spot to settle each evening with a glass of wine from the nearby Herdade da Comporta estate.
Of course we had to include the beautiful Italy, home to enticing food, perfect landscapes and breathtaking beaches, who wouldn't want to begin married life in such bliss. For the beautiful beaches along the Amalfi Coast, we would recommend hotel Caruso, located in Ravello and perched on a cliffside high above the sea; this stunning accommodation commands the ultimate panorama over the Amalfi Coast. Alternatively you may prefer the stunning sights of Rome, in which case you can stay at the beautiful Hotel de Russie where many of the top attractions of the Eternal City are within easy walking distance, including the Borghese gardens and gallery, the Pantheon and the fashion houses of Via Condotti. Whichever area you prefer, Italy provides plenty of choice to suit all newlywed couples.
Ah Croatia, a country drawing people's attention as of late thanks to HBO's Game of Thrones, but dragons and the Iron Throne aside this beautiful country, with its crystal clear waters and medieval towns, will hold a special place in your heart for decades to come. In the north the heart-shaped peninsula of Istria is honeymoon foodie heaven with truffles and oysters galore, while the Dalmatian Coast is home to tranquil islands and the Lesic Dimitri Palace Hotel, a restored 18th century Bishop's palace within the walls of the old town. From vintage sail boat rides around the Korcula archipelago to sipping wine at their seafront bar, this little boutique bolthole is the perfect mix of romance and luxury.
For sunny, sunny Spain, we're making a beeline for Mallorca. Stay with us a second here - we know the mentioning of Mallorca can often spark images of towering all inclusive hotels and elbow-to-elbow sunloungers, but not on our watch. Tucked away into the little hilltop village of Deia, and commanding panoramic views of the landscaped gardens and glistening coast, sits the Belmond La Residencia hotel. This little piece of paradise is a newlywed's dream, from romantic sunset walks through the surrounding olive groves to dining in the restored 16th century manor house. Alternatively head north and take a romantic road trip from San Sebastian to Girona, taking in Michelin-starred restaurants, local tapas bars and vineyards of the Basque Country on the way, this really is the ultimate gastronomical honeymoon.
The list wouldn't be complete without including the single most romantic destination on the planet… France, which we believe offers more to newlyweds than almost anywhere. There are immaculate hotels along the resurgent Riviera such as the Le Mas Candille, a flawless four-star hotel in the attractive village of Mougins, five miles from Cannes. Alternatively, France offers chateaux properties such as the Chateau de Bagnols, set amongst vineyards, forests and green hills in the heart of the Beaujolais countryside, to satisfy the dreamiest knight in shining armour fantasies. Choose between beautiful beaches, chic cities and mountain retreats, and then, of course, there's all that delicious food. J'adore…
